Biography of Fales geometry
The Thales Miletsky number generator is a name known to all Fales Miletsky - an ancient Greek philosopher and mathematician, a theorem is named after him, which is still being studied in geometry lessons. He is considered the ancestor of Greek and European philosophy and opens a list of world -famous philosophers. Although his scientific works have not been preserved, according to Aristotle, it was Thales that laid the foundations of Greek statehood.
Thales from Miletus and in the 5th century BC was considered the father of philosophy, and today he is a universally recognized founder of this science. The city of Miletes is considered the birthplace of the philosopher, and the name of the city has become a household name for him, and still is different than Fales Miletsky, it is not called it. The founder of philosophy from a noble rich family took place, thanks to which he was able to get a good education.
There is evidence that Thales was engaged in trade and loved to travel around the world, visited Egypt, Thebes and Memphis. The ancient philosopher comprehended knowledge of famous priests, paying a lot of attention to the problems of mankind, for example, studied the causes of floods and searched for ways to prevent them. It was Thales Miletsky who introduced contemporaries to such a science as geometry.
And later his followers founded a Miletian school in honor of their mentor. According to legend, Thales was not only a scientist, except for scientific knowledge, he owned oratory and was an active politician and diplomat; He was known as the patriot of his state - Ionia and urged the people to unite against the powerful enemy - Lydia and then against Persia. The personal life of the philosopher to date remains a mystery, information about his family has not been preserved.
There are several assumptions. According to one sources, Thales went to the line of his life, without getting a wife or children. Others tell that the scientist had a wife, and they had a son Kibist. And the others say that the scientist remained a bachelor throughout his life and adopted his sister's child. If you believe the last source - Thales had a sister. But this assumption is not supported by any documents, since nothing is known about the scientist’s family and parents.
Unfortunately, the sages are as mortal as ordinary people. The death date of the philosopher has not been established. As the exact date of birth is unknown, and nothing can be said about the time of death specifically. Presumably, this happened in the period from the years. It is reported that death overtook Thales at the moment when he watched sports competitions during one of the Olympiads, and the reason was the heat and the crush.
Nevertheless, the philosopher died at a respectable age, when he was already more than 70 years old. The scientific works of Thales, unfortunately, have not reached our time. It is generally accepted that two works were brought to the researcher - one is called “about the solstice”, and the second “about equinoxes”. Their approximate content was conveyed by biographers who studied the life and work of the philosopher.
It is reported that in addition to science, he was fond of poetry and wrote poems by a hexameter. However, perhaps this is not true. Thales left the mark both in geometry and in astronomy. It was he who introduced the Greeks to the constellation of the small bear and taught compatriots to use it as a guiding tool for their own purposes. Pretty successfully the scientist predicted a solar eclipse in the city as usual, at first no one believed the thinker, besides, a battle with the army of Lydia was appointed on the day of the eclipse, although Thales opposed this war.
By chance or not, but the eclipse that the philosopher so accurately predicted destroyed all the plans of the enemy - his troops threw equipment and fled from the battlefield. And the inhabitants of Miletus gathered an abandoned inventory and captured several dozen opponents who did not have time to hide. After this incident, the scientist gained great popularity, and fellow countrymen began to come to him for advice.
Among other most important achievements of Fales Miletsky, the calendar invented by him, according to which in the year there are days - 12 months for 30 days each, and for another 5 days are alternating. Useful discovery became possible thanks to personal observations and scrupulous calculations of the author. But Fales brought worldwide fame the theorem, which to this day is studied at school, is based on the relationship of corners.
It is possible that some of the above facts were known earlier, even before Thales, but it was he who summarized all the data known to him and turned hypotheses into proven theorems. It was he who showed contemporaries that it is not necessary to blindly believe the ancient sages, their words can and should be checked, tested, and each scientific discovery can be repeated. Thales achieved great success in philosophy.
He believed that all living things come from water, he called the “moist nature” by the basis of being. The universe, in the view of the scientist from Miletus, is a liquid mass, which eventually gained the shape of the bowl, moreover, inverted. The concave part of this bowl is the sky, and the stars are the gods watching life on earth. In the view of Thales - everything that surrounds us is animated.
And space, and water, and nature - everything has a soul. The soul seemed to the philosopher subtle matter.
No data on the teachers and mentors of the thinker have been preserved, nor about what sources of information he used, and it is impossible to say definitely whether Thales was someone's follower or not. It seems that in all in his life Thales achieved himself, he built his assumptions on his own observations and performances, and then checked them experimentally.
Nothing is also known about the students of Thales himself. With one reservation - that the adherents of the scientist opened a school with the name of the famous mentor, but no names or exact dates related to this event, alas, were preserved. The younger contemporary - Hercitel personally knew Thales and described him as a talented scientist and astronomer.
But Heraclitus was not his follower. Aristotle complimentarily mentioned the figure from Miletus in his scientific work, called "metaphysics", saying that Thales is the ancestor of philosophy. But Aristotle was not a student of Thales. Thus, today nothing is not known about the direct followers of the scientist today. So, Thales Miletsky managed to become a significant figure of his time and, taking advantage of the respect of contemporaries - representatives of the authorities and ordinary citizens - did a lot for the development of philosophy, astronomy and geometry.
His contribution to science has not lost its relevance, humanity still uses the discoveries of Fales. The Thales theorem is included in the compulsory school curriculum and in exams issues, it is actively used to solve geometry problems. The calendar proposed by the thinker today is considered generally accepted in the world. And when it comes to a solar eclipse, we accept the explanation that the moon closes the sun left by Fales with Miletic, a scientist whose name is known to everyone.
